One solution is to make use of text-to-speech technology. Claro Read and Texthelp work by converting written texts into spoken words so quite literally the computer reads the document back to the student. This can be installed at home and even taken to school on a USB stick. Word documents, internet pages, emails immediately become accessible and learning can start to be fun!
Accessing Written Materials
For a student with an inquisitive mind and curious nature, dyslexia can be a particularly cruel condition. They are capable of understanding concepts and digesting information much more quickly than they can acquire it through reading. An 8 year old child we work with, Bethany, is easily capable of understanding data at a rate of a few hundred words a minute and yet her reading speed is closer to 20 words a minute. It is no wonder that she finds reading so unrewarding and unstimulating!
